Yuma 50 Recognizes Col. Johnathon Nelson’s Service and Welcomes Col. Charles Seaberry to Yuma Proving Ground

Yuma 50 joins the Greater Yuma community in recognizing Col. Johnathon Nelson for his outstanding service and leadership at U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground and congratulates him on receiving the Legion of Merit prior to the installation’s recent change of command ceremony.

The Legion of Merit is a distinguished military award that reflects exceptional service, leadership, and dedication. Col. Nelson’s recognition is a meaningful tribute to his contributions during his time leading one of the nation’s most important military testing installations.

On June 11, 2026, Col. Charles Seaberry assumed command of U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground from Col. Nelson during a change of command ceremony held at Cox Field. As Col. Nelson moves on to his next assignment as commander of U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range, Yuma 50 extends its appreciation for his partnership, professionalism, and continued commitment to national defense.

Throughout his tenure, Col. Nelson helped strengthen the connection between Yuma Proving Ground and the surrounding community. His leadership supported an installation that plays a vital role in Army modernization, testing, evaluation, innovation, and readiness. YPG’s work continues to have a significant impact not only on the future of the Army, but also on the economic strength and strategic importance of the Yuma region.

Yuma 50 also welcomes Col. Seaberry as the new commander of U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground. In remarks shared by the Army, Col. Seaberry expressed his commitment to supporting YPG’s workforce, sustaining its culture of safety and excellence, and continuing the installation’s long-standing relationship with the Yuma community.
